Coffee is a must around here… it comes with being a Swanson. In fact, Andy roasts his own coffee beans and we have become a bit snobby when it comes to taste, blends, etc. We are trying to keep our kids humble about it, however, they too know a good cup versus a bad one. 🙂

When it comes to how we take our coffee, Andy and I are black (well, I vary, but start the morning dark) and our teenagers love creamer, and lots of it.  I began to make my own flavored versions last year when I came across this recipe. I find it’s healthier than what you can purchase in the market, and cheaper too. Once you’ve done it a few times, you will realize how simple it is to add this to your weekly routine.

The kids prefer the basic vanilla creamer, whereas I love a cinnamon-vanilla version. Other flavors that I’ve played with are caramel, peppermint, and I am considering trying a maple version next. Here are the basic steps (adapted from here) below, I hope you give it a try!

VANILLA CREAMER

1 quart half & half, or heavy cream (or a mix of both)
1 cup white sugar
4 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Combine half & half, and sugar in a medium size pot. Bring to a light simmer over medium-high heat. Once mixture begins to simmer, reduce heat to low and allow sugar to dissolve completely, about 2 minutes. Remove creamer from heat and allow to cool. Stir in the vanilla extract. Strain mixture into heat proof containers and store in the refrigerator till your next cup of coffee.

VANILLA-CINNAMON CREAMER

1 quart half & half, or heavy cream (or a mix of both)
1 cup white sugar
4 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
4 cinnamon sticks

Combine half & half, sugar, and cinnamon sticks in a medium size pot. Bring to a light simmer over medium-high heat. Once mixture begins to simmer, reduce heat to low and allow sugar to dissolve completely, about 2 minutes. Remove creamer from the heat, cover pot and allow the cinnamon sticks to steep for 1 hour. Strain mixture into heat proof containers and store in the refrigerator till your next cup of coffee.

i have to say, i love those bottles with your creamer in them! i’ve often thought of making our own sweet creamer for Terry. 99 out of 100 cups of coffee are black for me. (that’s per day!) 😉 where did you get those lovelies, if i might ask. thanks for sharing!

Susie, I love that you are a black coffee drinker, you would fit right in around here. 🙂 I got the bottles on Amazon, they are called Weck jars. I love them, although the teenage boy has chipped a lid, the clasps aren’t the easiest for unfamiliar hands. 😉 Here’s a link if it works… http://amzn.to/1HT8KBr
(I bought the .5 Liter size).
