we have started something new with the kids that we are all really excited about. we call it recipe roundup and it works like this… each friday i assign the kids a meal – either breakfast, side dish, main dish, or dessert. once they know what their meal is they have until the following friday to give me a list of their top three choices (it’s been up to five with zoe and breakfast!) i then choose what dish they will help me cook in the kitchen the following week. then i re-assign them a different meal for the next week and we continue on week after week. we have just started and it’s been so fun breaking out old & new cookbooks, (i have an intense love for cookbooks!) and seeing the kids excited about trying new things. all four (big) kids are so enthusiastic about this and for us, as parents, we want to continue fostering their love for cooking by involving them weekly with our meals. there are so many statistics that show the importance of families eating meals together, which we love doing regularly… but we also know that our kids will gain so much knowledge and confidence in the kitchen the more they can be involved.
this morning ezra made FARM STAND BUTTERMILK DOUGHNUTS, THREE WAYS from the “baked explorations” cookbook. (which i would highly recommend, if you like baking!) they were so, so good. we all told him which flavors were our favorites, and what we would like the next time someone makes them. tomorrow we are having zion’s dinner choice of fried chicken from the “ad hoc” cookbook and he is counting the hours till he gets to make dinner with us.
i am thinking about making this a regular series on olive and otto so let me know what you think of it!
