the girls and i, and some friends went strawberry picking this weekend.  we drove to a farm about an hour south of nashville and through some beautiful farms until we reached our destination. when we walked into the shop the smell of strawberry bread baking overwhelmed my senses and i knew we were in for a treat. we took our baskets out to the field, and began collecting.  the girls had so much fun, grabbing strawberries and eating as they walked along the rows. and little ottilie loved leading all of us as she ran ahead.

there’s really nothing like getting the fruit right out of the ground, and eating it fresh, or baking, or freezing, or making jam, or shortcake. dessert that night was vanilla pound cake with fresh strawberries and freshly whipped cream, with sweet friends, of course. and monday morning ezra and i found a recipe for strawberry bread and baked some here at home. it was just as good, if not better, than what we had at the farm store. you should try it if you have fresh strawberries, it was new to us, and we loved it! you can find the recipe we used here. we will definitely be going back, maybe picking blueberries next time!

p.s. for you locals, this saturday is a strawberry festival at the franklin farmers market.  sounds fun! info here

Anna, you have to try Ina Garten’s (the barefoot contessa) tri-berry muffins. Look them up. So good and so easy. I use whatever berries I have but you could do it with just strawberries. The top is sugary crunchy goodness!
Love to all those beautiful munchkins…and of course to you and Andy too!

Strawberry picking season is always exciting because it’s the first fruit to pick of the season. Here in New England we are still a few weeks away. Great pictures!
